Single Load Enhancment Device. (SLED)

Introduction:

Hello, here are a few pictures to help you build your very own SLED. Most website have a text description on how to build this, but pictures always helped me. Enjoy.

The SLED is used in Highpower Match shooting, allowing the shooter to single load each round. The rules do not allow you to load all eight rounds for slowfire, so you load one at a time.

The M1 Garand is designed to feed ammunition from an enbloc clip. If you single load your ammo into the rifle, without a clip or SLED, you are running the risk of a slam fire. Remember the firing pin is not spring loaded, it simply floats within the bolt. The enbloc clip or SLED presses upwards, very slighty, on the bottom of the bolt as the rifle functions. This bit of drag is expected. Without the drag from the enbloc clip, the bolt moves a bit faster, possibly allowing the firing pin to slam forward and ignite your rouond before its time.

Pictures and Instructions:

You will need a Dremel rotary tool, cut off wheel, needlenose pliers, vise grips, pencil and a straight eye.

You will make cuts into your donor enblock clip, using the cut off wheel.

The needlenose pliers and vise grips are used to put bends into the clip. I use the visegrips to hold a straight edge to the bends, actually bending the metal with the needlenose pliers.

1) All of your measurements and cuts should be based on the factory detent cut. This picture shows the flat rear of the clip, the factory detent and long "V" shaped cutout to allow for bolt clearance. The right side edge is not cut flush.

2) Here is how the cutouts are placed alnog the sides and rear of the clip.

3) Right side of the clip. Showing long cutout. This cutout allows the sde tab to be bent into a shallow "S" shape. The arrow indicates where the ammunition will rest while in the rifle. This tab keeps preasure on the side of the ammo, aligning it within the rifle to feed towards the chamber. If the ammo pops out of the clip, increase the bend in this tab inward.

4) Here is the left side of the clip. Showing two long cutouots in the clip. The middle of this cutout allows a small 1/4 inch sized tab to be bent outward from the clip. This tab hooks itself under the edge of the rifle receiver, locking the SLED in place. The forward tab, which is bent inward, allows you to use a small screwdriver or bullet tip to pry the edge of the clip. This tab allows you to easily remove the SLED for your next stage of fire.

If you clip does not lock into place, the edge of the tab needs bending. Leave this tab a bit bigger than shown and size it to fit your rifle.

Look over the pictures and read over my descriptions, you will be well on your way to making SLED clips for all your friends. I hope this helps you.
